Marine and Cargo Surveyors
Careers

Learn the craft.Become a surveyor.

Surveying is learned on the deck, not at a desk. We hire people early in their careers and teach them the work — hands-on, alongside senior surveyors who set the standard.

Why Picolo

Real mentorship

You learn by doing, next to second-generation surveyors who have worked every practice line. No busywork — real casualties, from day one.

A genuine career path

From trainee to independent surveyor to specialist, at a firm that has been employee-owned and stable for over 40 years.

Work that matters

No two casualties are the same, and your reports carry weight with underwriters, P&I Clubs, owners, and counsel.

01 Open position

Marine & Cargo
Surveyor

Trainee to Junior · 0–5 years
Rio de Janeiro  ·  Santos  ·  Fortaleza

You will attend vessels, terminals and cargo across your region; investigate hull & machinery, cargo and P&I casualties; and draft clear reports in English. Over your first year you grow from shadowing attendances to running straightforward surveys on your own — and taking your turn on the 24/7 emergency rotation.

What you’ll do

The work
  • Attend vessels, terminals and cargo — load/discharge, on/off-hire, draft, condition and damage surveys
  • Investigate hull & machinery, cargo and P&I casualties with photographs, measurements and evidence
  • Draft clear, defensible reports in English for underwriters, P&I Clubs, owners and counsel
  • Work with masters, crews, terminals, shipyards, repairers and correspondents
  • Support senior surveyors on complex casualties across every practice line
  • Take your turn on the 24/7 emergency rotation

What we look for

You
  • A completed or in-progress degree in Naval Architecture, Mechanical, Chemical or Marine Engineering — or a Merchant Marine officer background
  • Professional English — you can read instructions and write reports in it
  • Willingness to travel at short notice and join the 24/7 rotation
  • Comfortable in ports, terminals, shipyards and on board vessels, following all safety rules
  • Careful writing and sharp attention to detail
  • A valid driver’s license
02 Compensation & benefits

We offer industry-competitive compensation and a full benefits package — discussed openly, early in the process. That includes health cover and the statutory Brazilian benefits (13th salary, paid vacation plus the 1/3 bonus, FGTS, and transport and meal allowances), support toward professional registration and training (CREA; and bodies such as SNAME, SOBENA and NAMS), and a clear path for your pay to grow as you take on independent surveys and specialisms.
